Who we are

We are your local bus operator.

Established in 2020, CommMiniBus is a social enterprise based in Northamptonshire. We provide public transport options where other services are limited or not available.

CommMiniBus operates services under Community Bus Permits (Section 22 of the Transport Act 1985). This framework enables community-led operators to provide socially necessary local bus services where there is a clear community need and where existing commercial operators do not fully meet local transport needs.

We work with local communities to identify unmet transport needs and operate practical, reliable bus routes that help people travel for work, education, shopping and social activities. These include route 80P linking Northampton School and School for Boys, and the popular Shopper Hopper pre-booked minibus service around the Brixworth area.

All of our routes are developed in response to identified gaps in local transport provision. Services are often introduced following requests from communities, schools, employers, or local partners, and typically where existing commercial networks do not meet specific local needs in terms of routing, timing, accessibility, or affordability.

Most of our services operate without direct revenue subsidy from the local transport authority for day-to-day operation. Instead, we adopt a cross-subsidy model, using surplus generated from well-used services to support routes that are socially necessary but financially marginal. This approach allows us to maintain essential links for smaller communities while remaining financially responsible and locally accountable.

Where appropriate, local authorities and community partners may support socially necessary services through contracts, tenders, or grant funding. This support helps secure long-term continuity for essential routes, while our wider network enables us to operate as a resilient, community-focused organisation while maintaining operational independence and long-term resilience.

What our name means

Our name reflects the principles behind everything we do:

  • Community – our services are designed around local people and places.
  • Communication – we listen and adapt to what passengers and partners tell us.
  • Commuters – we believe everyday travel should be inclusive and sustainable.
  • Common – public transport should be a shared part of daily life.

If our work inspires another meaning to you, we’d love to hear it — every idea adds to our story.

How we make a difference

Our approach is simple: we plan and manage services locally and adapt quickly to community needs. This local decision-making model is fundamental to how Section 22 community bus services are intended to operate.

We focus on connecting communities, not just operating routes. Where possible, we adapt timetables and stops to meet local requests and improve access to key destinations. Our friendly, carefully selected drivers are central to this approach — they know their passengers and take pride in helping people travel with confidence and comfort.

As we continue to grow, we are expanding our network to reach more villages and towns across Northamptonshire. We also work with community groups, schools and organisations to deliver bespoke transport solutions when needed.

By travelling with CommMiniBus, you are supporting a service that puts people first, reinvests locally, and works to make a lasting difference for the communities it serves
